Abstract

This video essay is based on a revisit to the rusty ring on the cliffs of Harakka Island where the video work Year of the Ox – Walking in Circles and Day and Night of the Ox were performed during the year 2009 as part of a series of performances for camera called Animal Years (2002-2014). It focuses especially on the confrontation between the nesting seagulls and the human performer. Looking at the renewed interest in ecofeminism today, as well as Marie-Anne Casselot’s comparison of new materialism and ecofeminism, it returns to Val Plumwood’s thoughts on decolonizing our relationship to nature.
